Principal Message

Mr. Caricari

Our 2nd Annual Family Literacy Night is this Tuesday, March 20. The event will kickoff in the gym at 6:00 pm and then carry on throughout the building. It is very important for all people to enter through the front doors of our building for this event. Our Special Guest will be Caitlin Alifirenka, one of the authors of the book, I Will Always Write Back that we read as our One Book, One School initiative in the fall. She will have a mini-presentation in the gym and then have a book signing in the media center. Please go to the following link for the flyer about our event: FMMS Literacy Night .

On Tuesday morning, the FMMS Academic Challenge teams finished their season at the regional tournament. The 8th-grade team lost in the qualifying rounds, the 7th-grade team lost in the semifinals, and our 6th-grade team lost for the only time this season in the finals on the final question! Congratulations to the students on all three grade-level teams and to Ms. Van Valkenburgh and Mr. Stone on a fantastic season and for representing FMMS in such a positive way!

The week in review at FMMS: Monday’s baseball game was washed out and has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 29. On Tuesday, our soccer teams traveled to Pleasant Knoll and both lost close contests against the Knighthawks. The track teams were in action on Wednesday as they took on Gold Hill. Their effort came up a little short as both teams lost to the Bulldogs. Thursday night was a different story for our athletic teams. Both soccer teams were victorious at Banks Trail against the Timberwolves and the baseball team had a fantastic come-from-behind victory at home over the Warriors of Indian Land Middle.

In closing, the third quarter came to a close on Thursday, March 15 with report cards going home with students on Wednesday, March 21. As we enter the final quarter of this school year, I encourage all of our students to be committed to finishing the school year on a positive note.

Please continue reading for important dates and information.

Please go to the following link to see what the students received: 8th-Grade Dance  . Students can submit the RSVP and money to our PTO representatives on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings starting the week of April 16.

Musical Theatre Information:

Our school has been selected to participate in the Broadway Junior Theater Celebration held at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC. 7th and 8th-grade Beauty and The Beast cast members will perform a song and dance selection for Broadway professionals and participate in interactive theater skills workshops. This field trip will help our students further engage in their dramatic, dance, and musical education alongside hundreds of other middle school performers. The field trip is scheduled for Wednesday, March 28, 2018.  19 7th graders and 17 8th graders will be attending.

One School + Education = Hope (1S+E=H)

The student council continued with the “change for change” initiative as they collected change (and dollars) in front of the media center on Friday morning. Several students and staff donated and got to ring the bell. We will have an updated total amount raised in next week’s letter.

FMMS is teaming up with a local organization called Education = Hope to provide students in Ecuador with the essentials that they need in order to receive an education.

Let Me Run

Let Me Run is a running program for 4th thru 8th-grade boys, but it’s more about the boy than the run. Counteracting the negative pressures society places on boys, the program uses running as the vehicle to inspire, teach, and reach them. Combining exercise with fun activities and lessons, our trained coaches inspire boys to be courageous enough to be themselves, build healthy relationships, and live an active lifestyle. Registration at FMMS will open March 1 for mainly 6th graders! Spring season starts on March 27, meets Tuesday and Thursday after school for an hour and fifteen minutes, and ends with a 5k race on May 19.  Watch the video and register at the following link:

The Direction of Your Dreams

Career Fair for our 7th-grade students is this coming Friday!  On March 23, students will travel to Pleasant Knoll Middle School to meet with approximately 75 professionals in a variety of careers.  I went into classes this week to talk with students about Career Fair. I quickly reviewed the results of the interest inventory that they took last week with Mrs. Hisman and Mrs. Bauer-Brown.  Then we talked about who was going to be at Career Fair, why students should be thinking of questions to ask, the importance of soft skills and professional dress. To help your child prepare for Career Fair, please talk with him/her about who will be at Career Fair (students have seen a list) and review soft skills like eye contact and handshakes.  I look forward to seeing the FMMS students shine in front of our visitors!
