Principal Message

Mr. Caricari

As we approach the midpoint of the second quarter, I want to remind our students and parents to check Parent Portal regularly to keep up with graded assignments. We will continue to stay the course of being as paperless as possible by not sending home midterm reports.  If you have yet to get gain access to Parent Portal or are experiencing difficulties gaining access, please go to the following link: Parent Portal Information . Midterm grades for all teachers will be updated by 3:00 pm on November 21.

This past week at FMMS was filled with many activities outside of the normal academic schedule. The following is a recap of the week: Winter sports season is underway as basketball and wrestling practices started on Monday; our 8th grade students joined all 8th grade students from Fort Mill and others throughout York County at the STEM event at Winthrop University; On Thursday evening, we held our National Junior Beta Club Induction Ceremony. This is the 35th year for Beta Club at FMMS; and on Friday, our Honors Chorus opened the Winthrop University Men’s Basketball season by singing the National Anthem. They did an awesome job in front of a large crowd that included several FMMS students, parents, and staff who were there to support our students!

We had another exciting event that took place on Friday at FMMS. We had our annual Veterans Day Assembly. It was an outstanding event that included fifteen veterans and current members of the United States Armed Forces; former FMMS Principal, Greg Norton who provided the history of Veterans Day; Manning Kimmel of WRHI who spoke on the legacy of his Grandfather, Admiral Kimmel who was the Commander of the U.S. Naval Base Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941; and performances by our 8th grade Band and Honors Chorus students. Please go to the following link for a list of veterans who attended our program: List of Veterans . I was extremely proud of the behavior displayed by our student body during this event.  I enjoy this event every year and my favorite part is when the band performs the music that represents each branch of the service. During this piece, the audience is encouraged to stand when they hear the song and see the branch of service on the screen that represents the branch of service of a family member. Watching our students stand up with pride gets me choked up every time!

In closing, I would like to thank our parents and grandparents who have served or are currently serving our great country! I sincerely hope that you had a special Veterans Day yesterday.

Please continue reading for important dates and information.

Sincerely,

Tony Caricari, Principal

The Direction of Your Dreams

FMMS will continue with the Career Exploration Video Series on Friday, November 17 with videos on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), Business, Information Technology, and Health Science Clusters.  Just like the previous videos on the clusters, students will learn general information about jobs in those clusters and then see spotlights on specific careers.  Of these four, my favorite career spotlight is in the Information Technology cluster and is about ethical hacking!

Literacy Connection

At FMMS, students are learning close reading strategies called signposts (from the text Notice and Note by Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst) to help them explore and interpret texts.  As students read at home, keep these signposts handy to guide their reading and give them ways to talk about their texts with you. Please go to the following link for more information on signposts: Signposts Information.

Athletics

Attention all AB Club Members

Remember - the volunteer box on the Booster Club membership form you filled out at the beginning of the year?  It said “willing to volunteer as needed.”   Many of you checked YES.  Thank you to all of you that did check yes!   Well, the fundraiser below is exactly that, an event the AB Club needs your help.

The Fireworks Supermarket is looking for cashiers/baggers during their New Year’s busy time.  They need 10-15 people starting on Wednesday, Dec. 27 through Dec. 31.  Volunteers must be 18 and older to participate.  The store manager will work volunteers into a shift schedule based on your availability.  The manager will keep track of time worked and our FMMS Booster Club volunteers will earn $10/hour for the booster club.  After Jan. 1, the corporate office will write a check payable to FMMS Athletic Booster Club.

Chantal Baker- Manager   803-802-3200 or fireworks.ftmill@gmail.com

Fireworks Supermarket

3644 Festival Dr.

Fort Mill, SC  29708

If this fundraising opportunity works for you, please contact the store manager to indicate your availability and that you represent the FMMS AB Club.  In December, when you have your volunteer shift and hours confirmed at Fireworks Supermarket, please contact Suzanne Kuebler at skuebler@comporium.net with the information so we can keep a record of who is working and the number of hours worked.

Thank you in advance!  This is a great way for you to earn money for FM Middle Athletics!
